 Manchester United face their old rivals Liverpool at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon. This is the match that United really need to win to keep their quest for a UEFA Champions League spot next season on target. A loss would mean they could be even further away from the fourth spot, which is the minimum then need to finish in to qualify for the European elite competition for their 22nd consecutive season.

Having spent last weekend away in Dubai while other clubs bothered with frivolousness such as the fifth round of the FA Cup and having presumably watched in awe as two of their Premier League rivals – even though it’s hard to fathom they could still see us in  such a light – being taken apart by Bayern and Barcelona, United return to action today.

Every aspect of the club has felt slightly different this season. The hole left by Sir Alex Ferguson has left us all in uncharted territory, and has tested every single member of staff, every single player and every single fan. Personally all I’ve ever known is the success of the Ferguson era, and the stability that came with it. It would be easy for me to expect an immediate continuation of that success, and to even feel anger towards Moyes following a disappointing season so far. However, Ferguson’s United taught me everything I need to know about the club. At the heart of those lessons was the message that United will always rise again. Sir Matt Busby led the way in the 1950’s and 60’s, and ever since then the club has forged a path built in his image.

Yesterday, in the press conference prior to their meeting with Barcelona, Manuel Pellegrini made some sensational claims about Manchester City’s stature when compared to United’s. It was the hot topic of the day it would seem, as some of Barcelona’s’ stars also got involved in the debate, none more so than Daniel Alves.

A point at the Emirates doesn’t do an awful lot for United’s increasingly distant hopes of securing a Champions League slot next season, but the disciplined manner of the performance and a game in which they matched the title hopefuls may bode well for the longer term. Indeed, were it not for Szczesny thwarting Robin Van Persie close to both the beginning and end of the game, United might well have come away with a hard-earned point.
