The Dutch midfielder seems to be high on
the Red’s transfer targets this summer with a move rumoured to be very
likely, and it could well be just what United’s midfield needs.
With the season over and the transfer
window fast approaching countless players will be linked with a move to
Old Trafford before September 1st, however Kevin Strootman seems to have
been in the pipeline for some time and it would appear his style of
play would fit right in at the centre of David Moyes’ team.
An orthodox central midfielder has not
been purchased at Old Trafford since 2007 with the arrivals of Owen
Hargreaves and Anderson and many Red Devil’s fans would say the signing
is long overdue if it were to happen. Strootman is a box-to-box work
horse of a midfielder and would complement Carrick’s static style of
playmaking. United have missed a hardworking midfielder ever since
Darren Fletcher was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis in 2011 and with
the Scotsman’s future very unclear the purchase is vital to Moyes’
plans.
Strootman is a multitalented midfielder,
with a fierce left-footed shot, a good eye for a pass and no fear when
challenging for the ball, this would no doubt be a breath of fresh air
at Old Trafford as a tough tackler in the centre of the park has been
missing for far too long. Another plus side to the signing would be the
clear maturity the 23-year-old shows each game for club and country. As
captain of the Netherland’s under-21 side during the current Euro’s in
Israel, Strootman has proved he has a very old head on relatively young
shoulders and has shown fantastic leadership skills in such a short
career to date. Also standing at 6’1”he can prove to be an intimidating
presence on the pitch and help united win many midfield battles that on
occasions in the past 2 or three seasons they would have lost.
Being able to put your foot on the ball
and control a game at Strootman’s age is a rare gift, one many top teams
would wish they could utilise. A deal which see’s the Dutchman make the
switch from PSV this summer would be a fantastic one for the present
and the future of United and at a rumoured fee or around £17million
would be a good price given the state of the current transfer market.
With United’s chief scout Jim Lawlor reportedly in Israel to keep tabs
on Strootman we could well see the deal take place very soon if a deal
hasn’t already been agreed between the two clubs.
