David Moyes addressed the media at 2pm
this afternoon ahead of Sunday’s showdown against fierce rivals
Liverpool at Anfield. The key question on United’s fans minds was
whether there was any news regarding new signings, and Moyes confirmed
that he hopes to still do a little bit of business, but he can’t
guarantee it. Moyes also went on to speak about how excited he is about
the game on Sunday, and it is the sort of occasion as to why he wanted
the job at Manchester United. The manager also voiced his thoughts on
United’s ‘Champions League’ group, suggesting that the draw could have
been tougher on United and that he is very much looking forward to the
competition. Moyes also again reiterated that Wayne Rooney is staying
just like he has always stated and he heaped praise upon the England
International for his impressive performance Monday night.
The key quotes from the manager:
On Sundays game:
“It would be a big win if we can get it. Liverpool are one of the strong teams this season. It’s always been a difficult place to go has Anfield. It’s a great stadium and I’m looking forward to going back there.”
On New signings:
“It might be busy in the next few days. I hope we do a little bit of business, but I couldn’t guarantee that.“I wouldn’t disclose any names, just let the clubs deal with it and we’ll try and do it on a professional manner.”
On Wayne Rooney:
“We told you and everybody else from day one [our stance], so I don’t think there’s anything else to add today.“Wayne Rooney has been a great player for many years for Manchester United. He was an up-and-coming great player as a young boy at Everton and his career has gone the way that people expected it to go.“He played well the other night. He looks in good condition and mentally is in good shape. We’ll do everything we possibly can to keep that going and need him to keep performing well.”
On the ‘Champions League’ Group:
“I enjoyed watching it. We may have got a tougher job like Celtic. I’m looking forward to the games. I think the last one coming out [for us] was difficult, Real Sociedad from Spain.”
Overall, United fans will still be
clinging onto hope of a new signing after the manager revealed he still
hopes to complete some business. Moyes would not be drawn on any names
however after being asked specifically about Baines, Fellani and Anders
Herrera. It was also interesting to hear Moyes again have to reiterate
that Wayne Rooney is staying, and it now seems concrete if it already
wasn’t that the England frontman will be staying out at Old Trafford. It
also seemed clear that David Moyes is relishing his new job in charge
of the Champions, and he seemed to be relishing Sunday’s trip to Anfield
as well as the upcoming Champions League games. Hopefully this will be a
big weekend for United and they can pick up three points against fierce
rivals Liverpool, and maybe complete some signings in the transfer
market.
