Manchester United started their Barclays Premier League season on the
road at the Liberty Stadium against Swansea this evening. New United
manager David Moyes was going to have a tough debut match with Swansea
looking quite strong. In the past United have won one and drawn one over
the past two seasons that Swansea have been in the top flight. Moyes
selected a strong attacking side with quite a lot of experience. Want
away striker Wayne Rooney was named on the bench.
So, These are my talking points-
Patrice Evra
Leighton Baines, who needs him? The simple answer is we don’t.
Carrying on from his great form last season, Paddy had another good game against Swansea.
Solid in defence, good going forward and almost scoring, even the
most avid Evra doubters must now admit that he’s back to his best.
Spending at least £15mill on a new left back, who’s not as good as
our current one, seems pointless. Especially when were saving up for
Ronaldo.
Saturday proved that left back is a position that we should not be looking to spend money on. Even more so, considering we have Buttner as back up…..
Wayne Rooney
No matter what you think of Wayne and how the media have told us he’s behaving, the team is better with him in it.
No matter what you think of Wayne and how the media have told us he’s behaving, the team is better with him in it.
His performance, coming of the bench was great. You get the feeling,
had it been another player, his performance would be getting more
praise.
Instead, a lot of fans are more bothered about a picture, which shows
Rooney, and a number of other Manchester United players, not
celebrating a goal.
You get the feeling that if Rooney cured cancer, saved baby Jesus
from drowning and created a calorie free pizza, that our fans would
still have a moan about him.
We’re constantly being told that what’s best for the club is all that
matters. This game proved that we are a better team with Rooney in it.
Therefore, it is best for the club that Rooney stays.
Ferdinand and Vidic
Despite time creeping up on them, is there still a better centre back pairing out there? I don’t think so.
Their two styles of play complement each other so well.
Vidic, tough tackling, hard man who you don’t want to mess with. The guy will put his head anywhere to get the ball.
Ferdinand, classy player. Uses his brain, rather than his braun.
Great reader of the game and can pass the ball from the back better than
anybody about.
If we can keep these guys fit this season, I believe we are in for a
good season, even if it does mean the younger guys not playing as much.
Midfielder
Without wanting to take the shine of a great win yesterday, many
Manchester United fans are hoping this doesn’t make Moyes think twice
about signing a central midfielder.
Despite the scoreline, we were sometimes outplayed and overrun in the centre.
While the likes of Cleverley and Anderson are good players, I think we need a bit more than that.
You know that perhaps your central midfield is a bit ropey, when
you’re making Jonjo Shelvey look half decent. Jonjo Shelvey has never
looked half decent, in more ways than one.
Today showed the importance of finding a suitable partner for Michael
Carrick, although, to be fair, I’m not telling you anything you didn’t
already know.
Moyes.
A lot of people weren’t giving him a chance before the game, were they?
Hopefully, after the win, some of the fans will start to give him a bit of slack.
Today goes someway to showing that we’re in safe hands under Moyes.
Despite a poor pre-season, we are starting to look better, just at the
right time.
Hopefully, Moyes will be able to add at least one player to the team
and put his own stamp on the team. As long as that doesn’t include the
signings of Leon Osman and Darron Gibson, I think the vast majority of
Manchester United fans will be happy.
