Rooney to Chelsea back on?

The Wayne Rooney saga looks set to come to a conclusion one way or another over the next 12 days. It is being reported today that Manchester United have re-opened negotiations with Chelsea over the transfer of the England striker. Yesterday it was rumoured that Rooney himself held talks with Chelsea ahead of a move to Stamford Bridge during this transfer window. It seems to be that this transfer will actually happen in this window.

Goal.com report today that United are now talking to Chelsea with a view of sorting out the Wayne Rooney saga once and for all. Chelsea have had two bids rejected for the England striker, with United looking to get Spanish midfielder Juan Mata as part of the deal with would see Rooney head to Stamford Bridge, which is something I would consider with the fact United have been looking for a midfielder like Cesc Fabregas this summer, who seems to be staying at Barcelona. Juan Mata would be ideal to add some creativity to the squad. In fact he could be a quite effective replacement for Wayne Rooney, one which most supporters would like also.

The fact that Mata has made 120 appearances for Chelsea in the two seasons he has played there, scoring 32 goals and assisting in a further 48 goals it something that made me think about a possible pairing with Robin van Persie. With the Dutchman’s sublime finishing and Mata’s assisting ability, it is a partnership that really makes your mouth water.

Jose Mourinho seems pretty desperate to sign Wayne Rooney this summer, and has spoken about the player every opportunity he has had. We have even seen some of Chelsea’s players speak about the possibility of the England striker signing for Chelsea this summer. Rooney knows that whilst Robin van Persie is at United, he will not play his preferred role leading the line. Cast your minds back to October 2010 when Rooney wanted to leave the club before being offered a bumper pay deal. The fact he questioned United’s transfer policy and ability to land top class players, something which has put his nose out of joint with the arrivals of Shinji Kagawa and especially Robin van Persie. Be careful what you wish for……
Former Manchester United goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel, who is now a club ambassador spoke to The Sun recently about Wayne Rooney. The great Dane said he believed that Rooney would in fact stay at the Old Trafford club this summer.
“I know Sir Alex Ferguson came out and said Wayne asked for a transfer, but I have spoken to Wayne and he said he never did.
“He hasn’t said he wants to go to Chelsea, Arsenal or anywhere else. I hope United play Wayne against Chelsea on Monday. That will put everything to bed.
“David Moyes has said many times that Wayne is not going anywhere — but when he says that, no one listens.
“If you stick him up front you will get 25 or 30 goals. If you play him in midfield you will get someone as close as you can get to replace Paul Scholes.
“I think he wants to play up front and score goals, but he will do anything asked of him.”
One thing for sure is that this saga is not over yet, but with just 12 days before the summer transfer window closes, something will happen to end the speculation either way.
