INJURY UPDATE: RVP out for a month!

Manchester United striker Robin van Persie will be sidelined throughout the Christmas period and into the New Year after sustaining a thigh injury. The Dutch striker will miss the matches against Aston Villa, Stoke City, West Ham United, Hull City, Norwich City, Tottenham Hotspur, Swansea City both in the FA Cup and in the Barclays Premier League. There is a chance he may not be fit in time for he Premier League clash with Chelsea on Sunday 19th January 2014.

This is a major blow for United, who have been struggling this season and now have yet another injury to a player who would start ahead of both Javier Hernandez and Danny Welbeck. There have been rumours recently suggesting that the former Arsenal captain had handed in a transfer request, rumours that were quo shed by United manager David Moyes in the past week, but the fact he will now miss another month, after sitting out the last five or so weeks will most likely cause more speculation than it would end. Speaking about the injuries the club face, David Moyes said:
“Robin Van Persie is out for a month.
“It is unfortunate because I think if you look at our record with Wayne Rooney and Robin in the team it is actually very good and we have not had them for quite a period recently.
“Marouane Fellaini has a bit of a back injury. Michael Carrick is missing and Robin is going to miss four weeks with a thigh strain. That is a big blow to us.”
At a time where many United players have not stood up to be counted, it is time that this happens, especially in a period where so many matches are played and another loss or draw will be devastating for United’s season. Right now it seems virtually impossible that United could finish within the top four, but stranger things have happened and a couple of wins in a row will go a long way to changing that, but we have to get there first.

The fact that Robin van Persie played the full 90 minutes against Newcastle United last Saturday, and playing 27 minutes plus against Shakhtar Donetsk midweek, the question that needs to be asked is; was Robin van Persie fit to play in those matches, or is it just our luck for him to come down with another injury?

No point crying over spilt milk, but it is a blow to be without one of the most prolific strikers in the Premier League and his chances on winning the Golden Boot for the third season in a row looks unlikely right now.
