De Gea to sign new bumper contract

Manchester United goalkeeper David De Gea is ready to sign a new contract to stay at the Old Trafford club, which will curtail the speculation surrounding the Spanish keeper with a return to his native Spain with either Barcelona or Real Madrid, who have both been linked with him over the past few months.

De Gea, who is now being represented by super agent Jorge Mendes, will reportedly be sealed in the coming week when the agent flies into Manchester for talks with the player and club executives. De Gea’s current contract run until the summer of 2016 with the new contract expected to end in 2018 and will most likely include a pay increase to around £75,000 per week.

The Sun quote a source close to the player, which is presumably where this information has come from. They have commented on how happy the player is at the Old Trafford club and indicated it is Barcelona who are currently looking at the player. With rumours that Víctor Valdés will leave the catalan club for Chelsea materialising today, it seems they will be requiring a new goalkeeper. The source said to The Sun:
“David is happy in the Premier League and knows this is the season to really show what he can do.
“As for Barca, it’ll be very tough for them to convince United to sell.”
It would really be a loss if De Gea did leave United for Spain. Since arriving at the club two-years ago, he has really developed as a player and a person. All the criticism he has had from the press really drove him to prove them wrong. David will hopefully be at United for years to come, there is no major threat of him losing his starting position right now, but the competition for places brings the best out of all players at the club anyway.
